Before this date, only DOE contractors like Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and National Energy Technology Laboratory contributed to the project.
As of January 2008, the GridLAB-D project is open to a group of charter partners selected by the original developers for their ability to contribute essential elements to the overall system. These charter partners have committed themselves to getting the software ready for open source development, which is scheduled to begin in earnest in January 2009.
Beginning January 2009, GridLAB-D will be developed as a true open source project.
